The aim of this ten-months-long project is an increase of the citizens` knowledge about functions and the importance of local ombudsmen, and also about general principles of a protection of human rights. This project will be organized in four municipalities which already have civil defense attorneys: Sombor, Zrenjanin, Sabac and Rakovica. At the end of the program a manual will be printed with examples from the practice. –A year and a half ago we sent a letter to all municipality chairmen in Serbia with a request to establish the institution of ombudsman, and up to now we hardly have a tenth of them, said Branko Jankovic, deputy director of People`s Office of the President of Serbia. The majority haven`t done anything yet, firstly because they don`t understand what ombudsmen are supposed to do, or the existence of ombudsmen doesn`t suit them. The problem is also that there are not enough people who could do that. This project is financed by the Canadian government via Canadian Agency for international cooperation..
